The 100-Point Rubric
We evaluate each response across six areas. The score is designed to help identify strengths and opportunities — not to predict an admissions decision.
What we ask: What does this response teach us about you?
We look for meaningful qualities, motivations, values, interests, or ways of thinking. Strong responses go beyond describing an event and help the reader understand the person behind the application.
What we ask: Do you show rather than simply claim?
We look for specific examples of what you did, decided, changed, created, learned, or contributed. Impact does not have to be huge — it should be clear, credible, and meaningful in context.
What we ask: Do you explain why the experience matters?
We look for reflection that connects experience to perspective, growth, identity, motivation, or direction. Strong reflection should feel natural rather than forced or overly philosophical.
What we ask: Is every sentence earning its place?
We look for a direct response to the prompt, purposeful details, clear language, and efficient use of limited word count. Repetition and unnecessary setup can crowd out more revealing information.
What we ask: Could this response have been written only by you?
We look for language and perspective that feel natural, believable, and specific to you. Your response should feel polished without losing your personality or becoming generic.
What we ask: What does this response add to the larger application?
We consider whether the response reveals a useful dimension of you, provides context, complements your other essays, and tells admissions readers something they may not learn elsewhere.
Understanding Your Score
Your score provides a snapshot of the submitted draft. It is not an admissions prediction.
| Score | ESA Rating | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | Exceptional | Highly revealing, specific, authentic, and purposeful. The response makes excellent use of the essay opportunity. |
| 80–89 | Strong | Clearly communicates meaningful qualities and experiences, with targeted opportunities to strengthen depth or impact. |
| 70–79 | Developing | A solid foundation is present, but greater specificity, reflection, focus, or differentiation could strengthen the response. |
| 60–69 | Needs Revision | The core idea may have potential, but substantial revision could help the reader understand the student more clearly. |
| Below 60 | Rework Recommended | The response may benefit from reframing, restructuring, or choosing more revealing evidence. |
